Vaccinations for the dog always provokes different opinions and criticism.

Vaccinations for the dog is really essential. Here you can find out which immunizations are sensible and which you and your four-legged can do without.

One preliminary: Puppies should definitely get a basic immunization. Afterward, there are different vaccinations for the dog, which can also be useful – and which you can usually do without. If you are unsure, ask your veterinarian in case of doubt.

Distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus: These vaccinations are useful for dogs.

At the age of 8 to 10 weeks puppies should get a basic immunization. Useful vaccinations are against:

Disappearance
● Hepatitis
● Parvovirus

All These vaccinations for the dog are generally administered as a combination preparation and marked with the abbreviation “SHP” in the vaccination pass. That is, your quadruped is vaccinated for several years against distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus after completion of the basic immunization. For this to work, the SHP vaccination has to be refreshed a total of three times.

The first refreshment takes place in the 12th week of life, the second refreshment in the 16th week of life. All in all, your young dog will receive three injections at intervals of three to four weeks in the first weeks of life, then he is protected against the diseases for the time being. However, the basic immunization is only completed with the third refresher at the age of 15 months.

Why vaccinations in the puppy age are important

Puppies are usually protected against diseases from the antibodies they have received from their mothers. However, it is not clear how well the innate immune protection is. Some puppies get lots of antibodies and naturally have a robust immune system, others are more susceptible to diseases.

Between the 8th and 16th week of life, the so-called maternal antibodies lose their effect, so that an additional vaccination is useful for protection from distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus.

The problem is that SHP vaccinations consist of harmless live vaccines. The maternal antibodies do not know this, however, and fight the vaccines like real pathogens. The more maternal antibodies a puppy has, the worse he can build his own vaccination protection before the 16th week of life.

Only when the antibodies of the mother lose their effect, the vaccine can stimulate the body’s immune system to produce its own antibodies. So that puppies are completely protected against the pathogen, they must be vaccinated three times for safety.

Whether it is the maternal antibodies or the vaccine-induced antibodies, which repel the distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus exciters are secondary.

How often do vaccinations for the dog need to be refreshed?

After the basic immunization, it can be useful to refresh the SHP vaccinations for the dog. How often the refresher has to be done is, however, controversial among experts. Some veterinarians believe that vaccination must be renewed every year to ensure safe protection. This is, however, now considered obsolete.

This recommendation comes from a time when vaccination against vaccination against hepatitis, hepatitis, and parvovirus was vaccinated. The vaccination protection actually drops after about a year. Nowadays it is enough to have your dog vaccinated once every three years.

Some veterinarians even believe that basic vaccinations are sufficient. If this is too risky, however, keep the three-year interval.

Does your dog need a rabies vaccination?

A special case is a vaccination against rabies. In Germany, the serious disease has been eradicated since 2008. If for example, you are planning a holiday with a dog, you should inform yourself about the laws in your Reiseland. For some countries presuppose a valid anti-rabies vaccination against entry.

A low residual risk for dogs to be infected with rabies in Germany consists of dogs imported from abroad, where the disease has not yet been eradicated. This applies, for example, to many countries in Eastern Europe, Africa and parts of South America. If you opt for a rabies vaccination, make sure that the vaccine remains effective for three years.

Vaccinations for the dog against a kennel cough: Does this bring?

The dog vaccinated are mainly four types which are controversial, and you should ideally clarify with your veterinarian if your quadruped would benefit. This includes immunization against kennel cattle.

The disease resembles a cold and can be triggered by many different pathogens. It is therefore currently not possible to safely protect against kennel cattle by inoculation. In addition, Zwingerhusten can be treated and cured.

However, in special cases, it may be useful to vaccinate your dog. For instance, if he is generally weakened by a chronic illness or age, and an infection with kennel cattle would be dangerous for him. The vaccination can reduce the risk of infection.

Leptospirosis vaccination for dogs with the veterinarian

The substance of leptospirosis vaccination is made from whole bacteria. Therefore, the risk of side effects in this vaccination is quite high. Particularly in the case of small dog breeds, caution should be exercised. In addition, there are many different species of leptospires, and the modern substances protect only about four of them.

Nevertheless, it is not categorical to advise against leptospirosis vaccination. If your dog is playing outdoors in standing waters or in the garden can come into contact with the urine of mice and rats, he is infected. You can increase the protection from leptospirosis with a vaccination after all, though not completely prevent your dog from getting infected.
